Movement: Bring slow jams back to the club!

It happened again last weekend. My little group of troublemakers and I went out. We were out dancing, laughing, having fun, some of us misbehaving juuuust a little bit, singing along to our favorite old school goodies. You know, the usual. And then suddenly: lights came on, night was over. We knew it was coming, but we still get disappointed by it. No Jodeci. No Blackstreet. No SWV. Nuthin’.

We want to hear our favorite slow jams in the club! We appreciate (most of) today’s music, don’t get me wrong. But you have to understand: this is the music that was playing when we were growing up, the stuff that guided us through hormonal bouts of puberty and the bad decisions that followed up until we were 25. To us, 90s R&B will always be the pinnacle of good music. Here’s why.

All the feels!

These lyrics made you feel. Really feel. Like, seriously.

And you know you still sing along to this like there’s no tomorrow!

And I hate to break it to you, but if you’re under 21 you were probably conceived to one of these songs. Yep, I said it.

Lyrics were subtle

This isn’t technically 90s, but R&B like this lasted until about 2005 so we’ll include it for good measure. I honestly didn’t figure it out until I heard the original version rather than the clean version… At which point I also realized how badly edited the clean version was, but that’s a whole ‘nother discussion.

I didn’t realize what this song was about until a couple of months ago.

And another 2001 song that we’ll just put in here for the same reasons as 112.

Legacy

Since we grew up in the 90s so we were fortunate enough to grow up to the music of some of the best singers and entertainers to ever walk the planet.
With epic videos.

And record shattering sales numbers.

And vocal performances the likes of which we’ll never see again.

Closing the club the way you should

This is basically the main reason this post was created. We miss the closing the club-slow jams! I mean…

Or some of this…

This is only the tip of the iceberg, obviously. Keep an eye out on our social media outlets to get more music and join the #BringSlowJamsBackToTheClub movement!

We’re around on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

Bonus track

I love this man and this song from the bottom of my heart.

  1. This is very well written. I think you have true passion (the one that comes with pain) towards the art of human communication in the form of music; how you refer to today’s music, what it’s like to comprehend the amazing oldies, the reflection on each piece on one’s experience, just fascinating…

    I enjoyed, keep going 😉
