Let me paint you a picture. You’re on the couch with New Boo. You get to talking about parents and how you’ve always handled in-laws. A question pops into your head. Before you know it, you say it out loud. “What if your mom doesn’t like me?” He gives you a puzzled look and responds “Is she the one dating you?”
He makes a good point.
Deep down (generally speaking) we all want approval from our parents. No matter how old we get, they’ll still be our parents and we want them to be proud of their kid. But for some of us, especially those who feel they’re stuck between cultures, finding a balance between what we want and meeting our parents’ expectations of us can cause serious problems.
Breakups are never fun for anyone involved. But they get even worse when you’re very close with your now-ex partner’s family.
I’m in the middle of a family visit abroad and, while I love my family, sometimes it’s difficult to stay friendly when they ask you about your (lack of a) love life for the gazillionth time.
